Although doped up and under interrogation, they escape and unite, and begin searching for the sixth member of their unstoppable team for evil. Unfortunately, the cover itself gives away some of the mystery surrounding the sixth member: could it possibly be Spider-Man himself? Readers should be aware that this story is set in Marvel's "Ultimate" universe, where characters have been refurbished for 21st-century audiences. So, for example, the Green Goblin now transforms into an actual demon (instead of putting on a corny mask and suit). Bendis's terse dialogue and Hairsine's detailed, action-packed art gives the story a nice momentum, but little is gained by the attempts to add depth by having the characters talk about the dangers of governmental experimentation in genetic mutation. Bendis gives the villains real personality, but misses an opportunity to point out the tale's most obvious lesson: that any government facility that thinks five desperate supervillains won't try to escape from a group therapy session isn't thinking very clearly.

Daredevil gathers his team of Ultimate Knights and they plan to attack Kingpin. Moon Knight volunteers to secretly spy on the Kingpin as his new persona, Ronin. This worsens Moon Knight's already fragile mental condition, bringing his Ronin persona to reality. He crashes a bus into Peter's school. He defeats Spider-man and brings him to the Kingpin. The Kingpin reveals to Spidey that he owns his name and all the good deeds he performs only makes Fisk richer. He then beats up Ronin. Spidey confronts Daredevil about him being a traitor. The traitor is then revealed- Iron Fist. Iron Fist and Shang Chi appear to part ways forever. Moon Knight is shot in the head by the Kingpin's henchmen, but survives. Iron Fist then helps the crew distract the Kingpin so Daredevil can get to his goal...Vanessa Fisk. He tells Kingpin he will snap her neck. Kingpin tries to talk him down but Spiderman is the one who does it. Kingpin then gets his wife out of the country but he gets arrested, thanks to Moon Knight/Ronin going to the authorities, thus giving away his secret identity. The team is then shown separately, while Peter is walking in the rain past a shop full of Spider-Man merchandise.

Shocker and Electro also show up to fight Spidey, and in the shadows yet another Goblin might be waiting as Harry Osborn and the Hobgoblin return. Norman tries to convince Peter to reveal his identity to the world, believing that if everyone knows he created a world famous hero, he'll be forgiven for his crimes and be allowed to finish his research. But Carol Danvers, the acting head of shield while Nick Fury is away, uses Harry Osborn against Norman, using his as bait to draw Norman to her. He attacks the Shield agents which causes Harry to change into the Hobgoblin. After a brutal three way battle between Norman, Harry and Spider Man, Norman murders Harry by beating him to death, only to be horrified and sickened by what he's done. Shocked by what he is now capable of, he begs the Shield agents to kill him, and Danvers happily complies, blowing Normans brains out. The issue ends with Peter euologising Harry to the rest of his class, describing him as "Someone who stood up for people who couldn't stand up for themselves", and concluding that in the end, he was a hero.


Death of a Goblin

Quote: <img align="left" alt="" />The book opens with Peter in conversation with Mary Jane where he expresses his doubts about whether he's old enough to be doing what's he's doing. We then learn a recent encounter with the vampire hunter Blade left him absolutely terrified, and an equally harrowing encounter with the assassin Elektra has him wondering if he's too impulsive & lacks the maturity to make the right decisions. We then see him decide the best way to find the answers he's seeking is to ask other heroes, and to this end he sets out to find some. However after a disastrous encounter with Daredevil, where the man without fear tells Spider-Man he's far too young to be playing this game, we see Peter's all but ready to hang up his costume. However, he decides to give it one final shot, and he visits the headquarters of the Fantastic Four, where he offers up his services, in the hopes that being a member of the FF will make his role as a super-hero easier. While the FF turn down his offer, we do see that Johnny Storm takes the time to give Peter a little pep talk that partially restores Peter's commitment to using his powers to fight the good fight. We also see his class assignment about heroes allows Peter to further understand why he puts on the costume.
